David de Gea has questioned Manchester United's decision to sell Javier Hernandez in the summer.

The striker was previously a key member of Sir Alex Ferguson's side but fell down the Old Trafford pecking order after the Scotsman retired.

Hernandez made just six Premier League starts under David Moyes and spent last season on loan at Real Madrid as Louis van Gaal reshuffled his front line.

But the Mexico international failed to secure a permanent move to the Spanish capital and was subsequently sold to Bayer Leverkusen in August.

The Spanish goalkeeper has now revealed he would have retained the 27-year-old's services if he was in charge of the Red Devils.

When asked why he thought Van Gaal decided to Hernandez, De Ge replied: "I don't know.

"These are decisions for the coach. But in my team, he would always play," he told ESPN.

"He was an undisputed starter before and player of the year at United.

"It is difficult for him, for any player, to play little.

"They were difficult moments, but everyone trusts in him, knows the level he has.

"He can get you 20, 30 goals a season. I would like a lot to play with him again, hopefully it can happen."

Hernandez has scored four goals in nine Bundesliga appearances since his move to Leverkusen and De Gea is adamant his former colleague has finally started to show what he can do when he plays regularly.

"He always does something, always scores goals when he gets playing time.

"He is showing now he is among best goal scorers in the world."
