West Ham manager David Moyes was left disappointed as costly errors ensured defeat to Arsenal in a game he didn’t believe they should have lost.

The Hammers – who sit 16th in the table, only out of the relegation places by virtue of a superior goal difference – had 20 shot on goal against Arsenal, nine more than their opponents.

Despite only facing two shots on target, West Ham’s lackadaisical defending allowed Alexandre Lacazette a simple finish with 12 minutes remaining, the game finishing 1-0.

Moyes, speaking after the game, stressed that he was pleased with the performance, but acknowledged that it’s ultimately the points that matter.

“Big teams find a way to win when it is not their best day,” he said. “Today was not our best day.

“We didn’t deserve to lose. Today the mistakes were that we didn’t take the chances. Apart from that, the players did really well. We just couldn’t convert them.

“We didn’t start the second half too well but then we got back into it. I’ve made as many chances here at Arsenal than I have in a long time.

“I told them they played really well. We did against Liverpool and Southampton but it’s only three points from three games.

“I’d rather play not so well and win the game but you couldn’t fault the players.”
