David Moyes claimed he was “thrilled” with taking a point out of a lacklustre West Ham display against Newcastle on Saturday.

Craig Dawson’s header put the Hammers ahead against the run of play before Joe Willock was allowed to squeeze home a first-half leveller to seal a 1-1 draw at London Stadium.

Speaking to BT Sport afterwards, manager Moyes stated: “I’m thrilled with a point. It might be as bad as we’ve played this season.

“I’ve had words with the players on other days. I didn’t think it was needed today. Our levels need to come back up. I think if we improve individually, we’ll improve as a team.

“I didn’t take anything else away from the game today. Intensity we’ve got and I don’t think physicality has been a problem. Our ball retention, turnovers, not playing as well with the ball as we have done, not being as clinical in small moments – those things would come to mind before the physical side of things.”

One flashpoint during the match led to Moyes having words with Said Benrahma, after the Algerian only walked off when being substituted late in the second-half.

“That's what I was asking him,” noted Moyes. “I said run off so we can use our time and get a sub on as quick as we can. I want Said to be a team player, make goals, score goals and understand when to pass and when to dribble. They're the key things for Said.

“I don't think [the booing at full-time] was anything to do with the team, I think it was directed to the referee.”
