Everton confirmed today that David Moyes will be leaving the club so that he can join Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson announced yesterday he was standing down after 26 years in charge at Old Trafford and Moyes was quickly installed as the favourite to replace him. United have since confirmed Moyes as their new manager on a six-year-deal.

Moyes met chairman Bill Kenwright at his London offices yesterday afternoon but the Everton chief could not persuade his man to extend his 11-year stay at Goodison Park.

In a statement Everton said: “The manager met Bill Kenwright and confirmed his desire to join Manchester United.

“The chairman, on behalf of the club, would like to place on record his thanks to David for the massive contribution he has made to Everton since his arrival in March 2002. He has been an outstanding manager.

“During his tenure at Goodison Park, David has taken charge of the team on over 500 occasions including four European campaigns.

“His final two games as Everton Manager will be the remaining Premier League matches against West Ham United and Chelsea.

"Everton officials will start the search for a replacement manager immediately."
