Jack Wilshere today appeared to defend himself from criticism from Arsene Wenger after he was pictured smoking by posting a photo of Zinedine Zidane (below) puffing on a cigarette.

The 21 year-old Arsenal and England star was accused of damaging his reputation as well as health by his manager after being photographed with a lit cigarette in his mouth

Wilshere took to the social networking site twitter to make a point amidst the furore posting the picture of the World Cup winner and adding: 'But for the record..I don't smoke'.

Wenger said earlier: “I disagree completely with that behaviour,” said Wenger. “I don’t know really what happened — I will need to have a chat with him about that. When you are a footballer, you are an example and you don’t do what damages your health.

“The fact you can damage your health at home, you can smoke at home, you can drink at home and nobody sees it, but when you go out socially you also damage your reputation. I don’t know really what happened so for me it is very difficult to come out on that [whether it is a fineable offence]. It is a question that I face here that I didn’t know about.”

A spokesman for the player told The Sun newspaper that Wilshere had put the cigarette in his mouth as a 'prank.'
