Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has been banned for three games by the Football Association after accepting a charge of violent conduct.

Alli has been punished in relation to a ‘punch’ on West Brom midfielder Claudio Yacob in the 26th minute of Monday’s 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane.

The 20-year-old will miss the remainder of Tottenham’s season.

An FA statement said: "Dele Alli will serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect after he committed an act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

"The player accepted The FA's charge but contested that the automatic penalty of a three-match suspension would be ‘clearly excessive’.

"This claim, however, was rejected following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today [Thursday 28 April 2016]."

As reported by Standard Sport on Tuesday, the England international believed he was provoked by Yacob, who he claims had twice struck him off the ball before Alli’s temper seemed to get the better of him.

Neither referee Mike Jones nor his assistants saw the incident during the game and a panel of three former officials have decided Alli’s fate.

His manager, Mauricio Pochettino, said after the draw that he had not seen the incident but maintained that opponents were trying to get a reaction from Alli.

“Sometimes the opponent find him and try to provoke, they know he has a strong character and may react,” he said.

“I don't know what has happened, we will see. I have nothing to comment now but Dele has a strong character if you wind him up.”

Alli’s disciplinary troubles come less than a week after he received the PFA Young Player of the Year award, capping off a remarkable debut season in the Premier League for the former MK Dons midfielder.

The youngster’s tally of 10 goals and nine assists propelled Spurs on an unlikely title challenge with Leicester City.

However, the West Brom draw now means Claudio Ranieri’s league leaders can win the title before Tottenham play again if they defeat Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
