Didier Drogba: Wembley glory is a must

11 April 2012

Didier Drogba has targeted Champions League glory this season after admitting Chelsea are unlikely to retain the Premier League title.

Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by FC Copenhagen at Stamford Bridge last night but progressed to the last eight of Europe's premier competition 2-0 on aggregate.

Carlo Ancelotti's team are fourth in the Premier League and nine points behind leaders Manchester United and Drogba accepts the odds are stacked against a second successive title.

"To be honest, the chances of winning the title are really small," said Drogba. "Most importantly, we have to focus on third place because the club has to be in the Champions League and it's important to us to play this competition every year.

"There's also a chance we could finish fourth and still not qualify because a team who finishes fifth can take the final place by winning the Champions League. I don't like to think about this, although I won't mind finishing fifth if we then win the Champions League and play it again next season."

The club will discover their quarter-final opponents at tomorrow's draw in Nyon and the striker admitted he would prefer to avoid Manchester United and Tottenham while he dreams of a place in the Wembley final.

"It's difficult to go and play a Champions League game when you know that you're going to a stadium where you go for the normal Premier League games. Also, for England to get more chances in this competition, it would be great to get another team than an English side.

"They're all big teams that are left, so we'll see what we get. I just want to play this quarter-final and do everything to go through."

Drogba also hit back at suggestions that he has been unsettled by the arrival at Stamford Bridge of £50million striker Fernando Torres.

The Ivorian started ahead of the Spain
international alongside Nicolas Anelka last night, playing the full 90 minutes of the match.

When asked about reports suggesting he was unhappy by the arrival of Torres, he said: "That's not the case. The best way to prove
it is what I'm doing on the pitch. I think, from my attitude, people see that I'm involved 200 per cent.

"There will always be talk about my future. I keep saying it, I'm here and I'm giving everything and it's normal that the club wants to buy another striker because we are ambitious and we want to win the Champions League."

Drogba also insisted he was mystified by the furore surrounding the imminent re-appointment of John Terry as England as skipper.

He added: "For him to be captain for the England team, I think it's normal. There's nothing really
big about it."
