Edgar Davids coup is far from finalised, says Palace boss

Edgar Davids: Rumoured to be joining Crystal Palace
Ian Gibb11 April 2012

Crystal Palace manager George Burley urged caution today among fans who are getting carried away with the idea that former Holland star Edgar Davids is joining the club.

Burley was reacting to reports that the 37-year-old has agreed a pay-as‑you-play deal, having been out of the game for two years.

"There is nothing definite about Davids," he said. "This is to do with a friend of a mate who knows Edgar and it was mentioned that he might like to start playing again.

"Edgar has a home in London and he's talking about starting to play again. But it hasn't gone much further than that.

"There is a long way between wanting to play again after two years of retirement and getting involved in a tough league like the Championship."

Davids started his career with Ajax and then played for AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona and Inter Milan, before joining Tottenham in 2005. He had two years with Spurs before a final season with Ajax.

He hasn't played since leaving the Amsterdam club and his agent sparked this latest rumour by telling a Dutch press agency that Palace had offered him a contract.

Last year it was rap star Puff Daddy coming to Palace's rescue. That didn't happen. And at this stage it is as unlikely that Davids will be strutting his stuff in the Championship.

Palace are giving a trial to former Monaco striker Sebastien Grax and ex-Southend winger Stuart O'Keefe.
