Edgar Davids is planning to own a club, say Barnet

Edgar Davids’s remarkable move to the Football League's bottom club Barnet is the first step to him owning a football team.

The former Juventus midfielder, who won 74 caps for Holland and helped Ajax claim the Champions League in 1995, has moved to Underhill as joint head coach alongside Mark Robson. He will also play for the League Two club.

But Standard Sport understands the possibility will be examined of Davids, who lives close to Underhill, investing in the side and that the 39-year-old hopes to one day have ultimate control of another club.

Director of football Paul Fairclough said: “He wants to own a football club eventually — that’s what he would like to do — and our chairman Tony Kleanthous is a man with a vision.

“He does not see himself as the Messiah. He will only be as good as the players around him but he’ll add huge experience.

“We can’t expect him to chase around for 90 minutes but he might be able to make the difference.

“His move came about from a chance meeting with the chairman and we have been in discussions for the past three or four weeks. It was obvious that it was a good idea.

“We’ve probably got the best training complex outside the Premier League and we’re still developing. While we are not getting results at the moment, the vision of where we want to be is huge and Edgar’s vision marries with that.

“One of his ambitions is to own or have overall control of a football club. He is a shrewd man, he has wisdom and he has seen the potential we have here at Barnet.”

Having played for many of Europe’s top sides including Ajax, Juventus, Barcelona and both Milan clubs, Davids might struggle to adapt to working with players unlikely ever to reach a similar level.

Barnet, who only just avoided dropping out of the Football League last season, have only collected three points from 11 games.

Davids was set to train with the rest of the squad today ahead of their match against Plymouth at Underhill tomorrow when they will be looking to secure their first League win.
