Eleven Sports is locked in talks to renegotiate its rights deals to broadcast La Liga and Serie A games in the UK.
The streaming company, owned by Leeds United chief Adrea Radrizzani, secured rights for both Spanish and Italian top flight divisions over the summer on three-year-deals until the end of the 2020-21 season.
However, after securing the rights the plan was for Eleven to sub-licence the games to the likes of Sky, BT Sport or Virgin Media in order to give them a presence on traditional broadcast platforms.
Having been unable to secure such a deal, the streaming service is in talks to renegotiate its deals as streaming only.
"We are in discussion with our rights partners," a spokesperson said.
"Without carriage agreements with the existing platforms, alongside the challenges posed by rampant piracy, the market dynamics in the UK & Ireland are very hostile for new entrants.”
It is the latest blow to the streaming service after martial arts series UFC this week activated an exit clause in their rights deal which was set to start next month.
Both parties are confident of finding ground for a new deal, with La Liga particularly keen to support their rights holder, meaning talks are yet to occur with other prospective rights holders, though streaming platforms such as London-based DAZN are thought to be well positioned to make a move should the opportunity arise.
