Emmanuel Petit: Ditch mentally weak players, Arsene Wenger

Under-fire: Arsene Wenger
11 April 2012

Emmanuel Petit today launched a scathing attack on Arsenal, lambasting the club's transfer policy and describing the current malaise as the lowest point in manager Arsene Wenger's 15 years at the club.

Arsenal realisitcally only have fourth place to play for after Saturday's FA Cup defeat at Sunderland and last week's 4-0 Champions League defeat at AC Milan, but the former Gunners midfielder believes Arsenal should persevere with Wenger.

"[To fire Wenger] would be the biggest mistake," said Petit. "Arsene is still the solution. The players have to look in the mirror, be honest and ask questions of themselves.

"They are playing like they don't know what's going on, they don't know what to do on the pitch. Mentally, they're very weak.

"This is the worst moment of Arsene's career with Arsenal. They have to bring in more experience but you cannot sign big players if you are not in the Champions League.

"Every year they're selling their best players. Arsenal are not a football academy - they're one of the biggest clubs in Europe. They have to spend money to get the big names, and they must also ask some players to leave."
