England confirm World Cup 2018 warm-up fixtures against Italy and the Netherlands

England have confirmed World Cup warm-up matches against the Netherlands and Italy in March as they finalise plans ahead of next summer's tournament in Russia.

Gareth Southgate has previously spoken of his desire to "test ourselves against really good teams", and though they still feature in Fifa's top 20 sides both the Netherlands and Italy have missed out on World Cup qualification.

The Three Lions will first travel to Amsterdam to face the Oranje on March 23 before hosting the Azzurri four days later at Wembley.

England last faced Italy in a friendly in March 2015, when Andros Townsend's strike snatched a draw at Juventus Stadium. Their last competitive meeting ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Three Lions in the group stages of the 2014 World Cup.

England have not faced the Netherlands competitively since a 4-1 defeat at Euro 1996, but beat them 2-1 in a friendly at Wembley in their last meeting in 2016.
