England player ratings vs Iceland: Phil Foden the standout as younger stars run the show

1/19

England cruised to a comfortable win on Wednesday night as they beat Iceland 4-0 to round off 2020 with a victory.

Simon Collings delivers his verdict on how the players performed…

Jordan Pickford 6

Had very little to do on an easy night. Another clean sheet for the Everton goalkeeper, though, who will be happy about that.

Kyle Walker 6

Booked for a strong tackle early on, but other than that didn’t make any errors. A solid performance from the Manchester City man.

Eric Dier 6

A comfortable night for the Tottenham centre-back, who looked assured and comfortable in the middle of a back-three.

Harry Maguire 7

Like the rest of the defence had little to do, but showed some nice flashes going forward. Got forward a lot and almost setup Foden with a nice pass.

Kieran Trippier 6

Neat and tidy, and didn’t put a foot wrong really, but lacked the threat going forward that Saka showed on the other side.

Mason Mount 8

One of his best performances for England so far. The opposition may not have been the toughest, but the 21-year-old ran the show in midfield.

Declan Rice 7

A night to remember for the West Ham midfielder, who scored his first goal for England. Looked comfortable all night and linked up nicely with Mount.

Bukayo Saka 8

Just keeps getting better and better with every game he plays. The teenager is showing he can provide genuine competition to Ben Chilwell at left wing-back.

Phil Foden 9 | Star man

Setup Rice for the opener and wrapped up an excellent performance by scoring his first two goals for England. Looks a star in the making.

Harry Kane 6

Clearly desperate and hungry to score, but it just didn’t drop for the England captain. Went close a few times but failed to find the net.

Jack Grealish 8

Excellent once again and quickly becoming a key part of this England team. Looks dangerous every time he has the ball at his feet.

Substitutes

Harry Winks (Mount 64’) 6

Didn’t have masses of time to make an impact, but was neat and tidy in what he did.

Tyrone Mings (Walker 64’) 6

Came on and looked solid as he slotted into England’s back-three.

Tammy Abraham (Kane 75’) 6

Little chance for him to make an impact as he came on late for Kane, who had a quiet night.

Jadon Sancho (Grealish 75’) 7

Came off the bench and looked very lively. Beautiful link up with Saka as he setup Foden for his first goal.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Trippier 85’) N/A

Subs not used: Pope, Henderson, Keane, Chilwell, Calvert-Lewin, Bellingham.
