Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala has been called up to the England Under-21s squad for the first time.

The 17-year-old left Chelsea to join Bayern in 2019 and made his Champions League debut as a late substitute in their 6-2 win over RB Salzburg on Tuesday.

Musiala has already represented both England and Germany at international level and, having obtained British citizenship only two years ago, is likely to cause a tug-of-war between the two nations when it comes to senior caps, and he is a player the Three Lions - including senior manager Gareth Southgate - have been tracking for some time.

Squad in full

Goalkeepers:  Brandon Austin (Tottenham), Josef Bursik (Stoke City, on loan at Doncaster Rovers), Aaron Ramsdale (Sheffield United)

Defenders: Max Aarons (Norwich City), Lee Buchanan (Derby County), Marc Guehi (Chelsea, on loan at Swansea), James Justin  (Leicester City), Lloyd Kelly (Bournemouth), Tariq Lamptey (Brighton and Hove Albion), Jonathan Panzo (Dijon), Rhys Williams (Liverpool), Ben Wilmot (Watford)

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Josh Dasilva (Brentford), Ebere Eze (Crystal Palace), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea, loan at West Brom), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Oliver Skipp (Tottenham, loan at Norwich City)

Forwards: Rhian Brewster (Sheffield United), Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea), Dwight McNeil (Burnley), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich), Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal), Ryan Sessegnon (Tottenham, loan at Hoffenheim)

“Jamal has been doing really well at Bayern Munich, getting a couple of starts and making a number of cameo appearances and when you’re involved in a team of Bayern Munich’s quality you have to take notice of that,” said England U21s boss Aidy Boothroyd.

“We’ve been tracking him for quite a while and he has been in the system. I work very closely with not only Les Reed but John McDermott and Lee Carsley, as well as Gareth, in terms of when it is right for players to come into the squad.

“We think it’s the right time for Jamal to get into the MU21s, so we can get a close look at him. He’s been playing really well, getting Champions League exposure and he is one of those players who has forced himself into our plans.”

The Young Lions face Euro 2021 qualifiers against Andorra next Friday and Albania four days later knowing their place at the tournament is already secured. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Eddie Nketiah, Ryan Sessegnon and Jude Bellingham are also in Aidy Boothroyd’s 29-man squad.
