England Under-17s boss Steve Cooper is confident his side will handle the pressure on Saturday when they bid to reach the World Cup semi finals for the first time.

Cooper’s side cruised through the group stages, winning all three matches, but needed penalties to defeat Japan after their last-16 tie in Kolkata ended goalless.

That display has assured Cooper his team will not wilt when they face the United States in Goa.

“My players are ready for anything and we always have a plan, even for penalties,” he said.

“This is top-level international football — you can’t leave anything to chance.”

The USA routed Paraguay 5-0 in the last 16 and Cooper added: “They’re athletic and play with a clear identity, so will be tough opponents, but you would expect that at this stage.”

The Young Lions' quarter-final will be shown on Eurosport 2, at 3.30pm on Saturday.
