The Eredivisie season has been cancelled, with the title, relegation out of and promotion into the league scrapped.

Subsequently, league leaders Ajax will not be crowned champions and the history books will show a vacant title.

The Dutch league has become the first major league to take such definitive action, and a number of clubs across Europe - perhaps none more so than Liverpool - will be taking notice.

Similarly to the Premier League, the Dutch FA had previously remained insistent they wanted to finish their season if at all possible.

However, on Tuesday, the Dutch government extended a ban on major events until September 1, essentially diminishing that possibility.

On Thursday, Uefa announced they expect each and every league to continue should it remain possible, but conceded that some leagues may need to "prematurely terminate" their seasons should they have "legitimate reasons".

Dutch football’s governing body KNVB - after the government announcement - said they would consult with Uefa before making a final decision, one that has now been reached.

This becomes important for Liverpool - who are on course for a first ever Premier League title - as the Eredivisie have now essentially provided a blueprint that could become the norm.

They have complied in full with Uefa's guidelines; European places will be decided by the 'sporting merit' principle of points-per-game, while they have chosen themselves not to name a champion or enforce relegations.

A Premier League resumption, despite their intentions, is not certain. The Eredivisie's decision has not relegated any teams nor crowned a champion before their time.

Should the Premier League fail to restart, a similar outcome would be of no shock. It's certainly a worry for Liverpool fans.
