Eric Dier will begin the 2017-18 Premier League season with revenge on his mind as Tottenham travel to Newcastle on the opening weekend.

Spurs last faced Newcastle on the final day of the 2015-16 season, a day when they needed only to draw to guarantee they would finish above Arsenal for the first time since 1995.

However Mauricio Pochettino’s side fell apart in humiliating fashion at St James’ Park, losing 5-1 to a Newcastle side whose relegation had already been confirmed.

Pochettino admitted after that defeat that he had wanted to “kill” his players but Spurs, who ended Arsenal’s hoodoo over them in commanding style next season, will not have to wait long to get payback on the Magpies.

The visit to the North East will be followed by Wembley’s first Premier League game as Spurs host Chelsea and Dier is eager to get the new season underway.

“These are two very exciting games for different reasons,” Dier told the Tottenham website.

“Newcastle have just come up [having won the Championship] and I'm sure the atmosphere will be fantastic for their first game back in the Premier League.

“We want to start well - and make up for what happened there on the last day of the season two years ago.

“Then it's Chelsea [Tottenham’s first game of the season at Wembley]...we've had some great games against them in recent seasons and we will be looking to set down an early marker.”

The Premier League fixture list, announced earlier today, has also handed Spurs a relatively favourable run of games after their Champions League fixtures, with five of the six at Wembley.
