FIFA Best Awards: Erik Lamela’s stunning rabona goal for Tottenham against Arsenal handed Puskas Award

Erik Lamela has been awarded the coveted Puskas Award at the FIFA Best ceremony.

The Argentine’s stunning rabona goal against Arsenal in March was handed the prestigious gong which recognises the best effort over the past year, beating off competition from the likes of Patrick Schick’s effort from the halfway line for the Czech Republic against Scotland at Euro 2020 and Medhi Taremi’s overhead kick for Porto against Chelsea.

As was perhaps the best summation of Lamela’s Tottenham career, the forward was also sent off during March’s North London derby and joined Sevilla over the course of the summer.

“Thank you so much, I’m very happy to win this award,” said Lamela on a video link.

“Honestly, nothing [was going through his mind], in that moment I didn’t think too much.

“I didn’t realise how special the goal was.

“I just kicked the ball and started running around the pitch with my teammates!”
