Mesut Ozil penalty miss: 'Why would you ever let him take a penalty?' - Twitter reacts as Arsenal star misses spot-kick

Fans were quick to jump onto Twitter during the early stages of Germany's last-16 clash with Slovakia on Sunday to talk about Mesut Ozil's penalty miss.

Jerome Boateng gave Germany the lead with his superb volley in the ninth minute before Arsenal star Ozil was then handed the chance to take Joachim Low's side 2-0 up after 13 minutes for Martin Skrtel's push on Mario Gomez in the area.

However, Ozil ended up seeing his subsequent spot-kick saved by Matus Kozacik after deciding to drive his effort to the right of the goal - which the Slovakia goalkeeper guessed correctly and saved.

The miss means Ozil became the first German player to miss a penalty in a major tournament since Lukas Podolski in 2010.

And, despite Germany taking a 2-0 lead just before the break through Gomez, some fans went onto Twitter to ask just why Ozil was handed the spot-kick responsibilities in the first place.
