Portugal vs France Euro 2016 final referee: Mark Clattenburg to meet Pepe again after Champions League drama

Premier League official Mark Clattenburg has been selected to referee the Euro 2016 final between Portugal and France.

The 41-year-old was widely expected to be handed the whistle for the showpiece in Paris after he wasn't selected for either a quarter-final or semi-final.

Clattenburg, who also officiated both the FA Cup and Champions League finals earlier this year, has been placed in charge of three games at the European Championships thus far, but is yet to oversee a game involving either hosts France or Portugal.

The official endured a testing Champions League final on May 28 as city rivals Real Madrid and Atletico battled each other, with Clattenburg making waves on social media for his frustrated reaction to Portugal international Pepe.

Clattenburg was criticised for failing to send the Madrid defender off after repeated fouling and simulation, with the referee distinctly unimpressed after Pepe feigned injury following a clash with Yannick Carrasco.

Pepe is expected to return for Portugal after missing the semi-finals through injury, telling reporters: "I'm fine, I had the chance to train today and will be available."

The referee's last game at Euro 2016 was the round of 16 clash between Switzerland and Poland, which the Poles won on penalties following a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.

Clattenburg was also in charge of Czech Republic against Croatia and Italy's win over Belgium in the group stages.

Following his role in both the FA Cup and Champions League showpieces earlier this year, Sunday's final at the Stade de France will also go down alongside the 2012 League Cup Final and the 2012 Olympics gold medal match as one of the biggest in Clattenburg's refereeing career.
