West Ham's Dimitri Payet lit up the opening game of Euro 2016 courtesy of a stunning winner in France's 2-1 victory against Romania.

Les Bleus dazzled in patches against a stubborn opponent but looked destined to have to settle for a draw after Bogdan Stancu cancelled out Olivier Giroud's opener from the penalty spot.

But Payet, who started alongside Giroud and Antoine Griezmann on the left-hand side of a front three, came up trumps in the 89th minute.

The 29-year-old received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and rifled home a superb effort into the top corner to help France take control of Group A.

The relief around the Stade de France was palpable and Payet left the pitch in tears when he was withdrawn by Didier Deschamps in injury time.

Payet, who was born on Reunion island, has struggled to receive recognition on the international stage but earned plenty of plaudits thanks to his heroics tonight.

West Ham's official Twitter account led the tributes for their talisman as Europe finally seems to understand that he Payet belongs to thee east Londoners.

Next up for Payet and France is a clash with Albania on Wednesday night.
