Wigan crashed out of the Europa League with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of NK Maribor in what was former Brentford boss Uwe Rosler's first game in charge.

The Latics needed victory on Thursday to stand any chance of progression and started brightly as Jordi Gomez converted from the spot before the break.

But their task was made harder moments later when Chris McCann handled in the box and duly received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

The hosts converted the resulting penalty before Zeljko Filipovic curled home from 25 yards to complete the turnaround just before the hour-mark and conclude the scoring.

Rubin Kazan’s 2-0 victory over SV Zulte Waregem meant Rosler’s men would have advanced with a win, but that result never looked likely even after the home team surrendered their numerical advantage with 15 minutes left on the clock.

With victory over Wigan, Maribor became the first side in five seasons of Europa League football to progress from the group after being bottom leading into matchday six.

Despite ending their campaign with a 1-0 defeat in St Gallen, Swansea proceeded to the final 32.

Kuban Krasnodor drew 1-1 in Valencia and therefore missed the chance to overtake Michael Laudrup's side - who finished as Group A runners-up.

The Premier League club could potentially face Arsenal's Champions League Group F opponents Napoli in the next round.

Elsewhere, Lyon progressed from Group I alongside Real Betis who finished second while Liberic qualify behind Sevilla.

Dynamo Kiev brushed off a showdown with Rapid Vienna to advance and Lazio face a tougher draw after only managing a goalless draw with group winners Trabzonspor.

Chornomorets Odesa sunk PSV Eindhoven 1-0 in Holland to go through at the Dutch club's expense.
