Fabio Capello: I would have done better at Euro 2012 than Roy Hodgson

27 July 2012

Fabio Capello is still bitter about the end of his time as England manager and says that the Three Lions would have done better at Euro 2012 if he had been in charge.

The Italian, who has just been named as Russia’s new coach, resigned from the England job after the FA stripped John Terry of the captaincy while he awaited trial for allegedly racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand.

Regarding the Euros and his resignation Capello said: “If I were with your guys it would've been even better.

"I'd worked there for four years and after what happened I wanted to stop.

"We had qualified for the finals and it was only the John Terry story that meant I couldn't go to the finals."

Capello made it clear that the FA’s decision regarding John Terry left him with no choice but to resign as it violated the terms of his contract and diminished his control over the squad.

The FA deny that their actions contravened any contractual agreements and say that the Italian’s representatives have acknowledged that.

However, the 66-year-old clearly disagrees, saying: "On that issue with the English (FA), with my contract, it was put down on paper that the decision as to who would be captain should be made only by the coach. It was down on paper, in the contract, in black and white.

"Every national coach works for two years towards a goal - that is the ambition of every coach - but I was not given the opportunity to fight for the Euros with England.

"When you are told this is the goal... if you are always interfered with, you don't feel well. You feel ill at ease. I wanted to be the main guy with the national team again and to take a team to Brazil. I wanted that again."
