Fabio Capello refuses to play it safe as England prepare for crunch clash

Fabio Capello: 'You need to play the same style'
11 April 2012

Fabio Capello insists England will not change their approach for the crunch Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on Friday.

England only need a point in Pogdorica in what is their final qualifying match to seal their place at next summer's tournament. And Capello has vowed to stick to the principles that have seen his team win all three Group G away games.

The Italian said: "You need to play the same style as all the other away games. We are going to win this game, not for the draw. If you play for a draw it is a big mistake.

"You are not focused on the game and you are playing to defend the result. When you do that you make some silly mistakes."

If England lose, Montenegro can top the group with a win against Switzerland in Basle on Tuesday night that would leave England facing a play-off to qualify.

Capello is determined to avoid that scenario and has spoken to Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni for advice.

The Italian gained a 0-0 draw in Montenegro when Ireland played a World Cup qualifier there in 2008.

"Giovanni told me to be careful," said Capello. "He said something can always happen. It will be different to what we are used to."
