Manchester City made their return to the Champions League knock-out stages in scintillating fashion as they thrashed FC Basel 4-0.

City travelled to Switzerland for the leg of their last-16 tie and hammered a wasteful Basel side to all but book their place in the next round of the competition.

Pep Guardiola’s side arguably settled the tie in the first half, scoring three well-worked goals, finished off by Ilkay Gundogan , Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero.

Gundogan scored his second, and City’s fourth, with a brilliant second-half strike as the Premier League leaders dazzled at St. Jakob Park.

In a bizarre first half, Basel (who defeated City's rivals Manchester United in the group-stages) created a huge amount of chances.

With a little more composure and attacking panache, they might have still been in the tie - but it wasn’t to be for the Swiss side as they fell to an embarrassing defeat, and face a near-impossible task when they travel to England for the second leg in three weeks.
