Robin van Persie has retired from professional football at the age of 35.

The former Arsenal and Manchester United striker played in his final game for boyhood club Feyenoord on Sunday having announced his intention to retire earlier this year.

The Dutchman would have been disappointed to end up on the losing side after Giovanni van Bronckhorst's team lost 2-0 to ADO Den Haag.

Van Persie scored 144 Premier League goals in 280 appearances, making him the highest-scoring player from the Netherlands in English top-flight history.

After spending eight successful years with Arsenal that included an FA Cup win, Van Persie caused a stir in 2012 when he opted to join fierce rivals Manchester United for £24million.

He won the Premier League with United in the 2012-13 season, the final campaign under Sir Alex Ferguson, and scored a memorable header for the Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup.

In total, Van Persie scored 52 goals in 101 senior appearances for his country.

The forward found himself frozen out under Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford before moving on to Fenerbahce and the Turkish Super Lig in 2015.

Like many Dutch players who came to play in the Premier League, Van Persie returned to his first club Feyenoord in 2017 and scored 20 goals in 34 matches for the Eredivisie outfit.
