Tonight’s Champions League semi‑final renews one of the biggest rivalries in European football.

“The Clasico de Europa is back,” wrote one Spanish newspaper after Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were drawn together. Their last meeting in the 2012 semi-finals saw both sides win the home leg 2-1 only for Bayern to go through on penalties.

The two heavyweights have rubbed shoulders so often the encounter could almost be treated as a derby. The first leg at the Bernabeu will be the 21st European Cup match of a rivalry that dates back to the Seventies.
