Chelsea are expected to confirm they have agreed terms with Frank Lampard over a new contract.

As Standard Sport revealed in February, the club had a change of heart over their decision to let Lampard leave when his current deal ends in the summer.

Chelsea have rewarded the England international, who is set to captain the team against Benfica in the Europa League Final tonight, for his superb form in the second half of the season.

Earlier in the campaign, the club were worried that with the midfielder turning 35 in June, he was showing signs of decline and that it was time to let him go. But he has scored nine goals in his last 18 Premier League appearances to help secure a top-four finish.

Lampard’s brace against Aston Villa at the weekend also took him above Bobby Tambling to become Chelsea’s all-time top scorer on 203 goals.

It is believed a compromise has been reached over his wage demands, with a significant reduction on his current £150,000‑a-week salary.

Chelsea could wait to officially announce the news on their post‑season tour to the USA next week, where they have two matches against Manchester City.
