From Pedro Mendes' no goal to that tattoo... Mark Clattenburg's most controversial moments

Mark Clattenburg has earned himself a reputation as one of Europe’s finest referees over recent years but controversy has never been far from the 41-year-old.

The referee of 2016’s European Championships, Champions League and FA Cup finals is to move to Saudi Arabia after 12 years in the Premier League, refereeing governing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited confirmed today.

With Clattenburg’s departure the Premier League loses perhaps its finest referee, though that may not be an assessment shared by Crystal Palace supporters, who will likely never forgive the referee for disallowing Connor Wickham’s goal in the FA Cup final in May last year.

Similarly he will doubtless never forget his 2005 error in not spotting a Pedro Mendes shot clearly crossing the line at Old Trafford, in the process denying Spurs a first victory at Manchester United’s ground.
