Fulham notified Hangeland of his exit ‘in right way’

Fulham have defended their handling of Brede Hangeland’s departure after the defender claimed he was told his contract was being cancelled via e-mail.

Hangeland has been released following six-and-a-half years at Craven Cottage and is “immensely disappointed” over the manner of his exit.

The 32-year-old Norwegian, who had a year left on his contract, said in a statement he was informed of his release without holding any discussions with Fulham officials.

Fulham responded by insisting “all personal protocol was followed” and that Hangeland “was notified in the right way”.

Hangeland was aware Fulham would be releasing a statement announcing his contract had been terminated but said: “I was told of this decision via email. This was without anyone from the club having met me beforehand to discuss my contract or my future.

“After six-and-a-half years of hard work and loyalty, and having served the last few years as captain, I am immensely disappointed at how this was handled.”

It is understood, however, Hangeland spoke to manager Felix Magath about his future following Fulham’s relegation from the Premier League but refused to commit to the club and ignored requests to contact Magath last month.

Fulham released a statement via their official Twitter account, saying: “The club would like to clarify that all personal protocol was followed and that Brede was notified in the right way.”

Hangeland last month said Fulham had become “unrecognisable” from the club who reached the Europa League Final four years ago and suggested mistakes off the pitch were to blame for the Cottagers’ disastrous season. Now a free agent, he is likely to attract interest from Premier League clubs. “I still have much to offer and look forward to the next chapter in my career,” said Hangeland.

“I would like to thank the fantastic Fulham fans, who I have got to spend the best years of my football career with.”

John Arne Riise, who was released by Fulham last month, has criticised the club over their treatment of Hangeland. He said: “So Fulham fans, your captain, the legend Brede was released by e-mail. No calls, no meetings. Is that how you treat a player like Brede?”

Meanwhile, Fulham midfielder Pajtim Kasami is close to joining Olympiakos.
