Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli ‘couldn’t really believe’ he got to play against ‘idol’ Cristiano Ronaldo

Gabriel Martinelli has admitted he “really couldn’t believe” he got to play against “idol” Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Arsenal forward has emerged as one of the most promising young players playing in Europe, forming a key part of Mikel Arteta’s impressive revolution at the club, one that largely focuses on developing burgeoning talent.

Hailed by Jurgen Klopp as an “outstanding player”, the 20-year-old has scored five times in 17 Premier League games this season, including a crucial winner away at Watford on Sunday.

Martinelli lined up against Ronaldo during Arsenal’s loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford in December, a game in which the Brazilian teed up Martin Odergaard for what looked like an equaliser either side of a Ronaldo brace.

Since, he has scored four goals while laying on another assist as Arsenal look to hold off United in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“When I saw Ronaldo in the game against United I couldn’t really believe he was there,” said Martinelli (via Soccer Bible).

“I saw him and I was like, ‘wow this is Ronaldo.’

“I’m a bit shy, so I didn’t say anything, just shook hands with him. But to play against my idols shows that I’ve got there.”
