Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Gabriel Martinelli faces months on the sidelines after the forward suffered a knee injury during Arsenal training.

Arsenal confirmed on Tuesday evening that Martinelli had sustained cartilage damage in his left knee on Sunday, and further tests are required.

But speaking during a pre-match press conference on Tuesday evening, Arteta offered a downbeat initial prognosis, saying: "We had some really bad news against yesterday [Monday].

"In training in the last action [Martinelli] got hit by another player.

"He’s damaged his knee, the doctors are assessing the extent of the injury but it’s not looking good at all."

Asked how bad the injury was, Arteta said: "We don’t know, but he’s looking at months.

"If two players bang each other, or if what happens with Pablo [Mari] on his own and a lot of others we’ve had in recent months, they are not muscular injuries. They are more traumatic injuries.

"But again, we’ve been really unlucky with that and we have to deal with it."
