Gary Cahill defended Chelsea's performance against Tottenham on Wednesday, saying the team are "not robots" as the defender insisted the loss will not derail the club's title charge.

Dele Alli's two headed goals either side of the break brought Chelsea's 13-game winning streak to an end at White Hart Lane, and prevented Antonio Conte's side from becoming the first team to secure 14 straight top-flight victories in a single season.

Cahill conceded after the match that the Chelsea players did not perform against Spurs to the same levels they have done since October, but he insisted the squad will not dwell on the result too much as they prepare to take on Peterborough in the FA Cup on Sunday.

"We were short today all over the pitch, I don't know why. We are not robots," Cahill said.

"It was a great opportunity for us today but one defeat out of 14 is not a problem. We won't dwell on this for a week, we go again and kick off another run."

He added to BBC Sport: "We are disappointed to lose the game and not beat the record, all of us are a part of that, but one loss in 14 games is an incredible record.

"We were short of the levels we set ourselves, for whatever reason that may be, a few misplaced passes and not moving the ball as quick as we have been.

"They are a top quality opposition and we got punished for being short. We have strong personalities and it won't affect us mentally."
