Gary Cahill thunderbolt adds to Gianfranco Zola's gloom

The statistics won't make pleasant reading for Gianfranco Zola today. Last night's reverse after extra-time at Bolton was the club's fourth defeat in seven matches this season.

This was also the Hammers' seventh failure in eight years to reach the fourth round of the Carling Cup.

Zola can now at least concentrate on getting his team's League form right but he is faced with a trip to Manchester City next Monday followed by a home derby with Fulham and a tricky trip to Stoke.

Zola, who celebrated his first anniversary at Upton Park this month, said: "It has been a very long and disappointing night for us.

"With the way things were going on the pitch I was not expecting that. I was waiting for the second goal to come at any moment - it was very disappointing.

"When you build up a lot of chances you have to do better and when you play teams like Bolton you can expect a corner can cause problems.

"There are moments when you have to raise your attention and deal with those situations better."

Gary Cahill was the unlikely match-winner for Bolton with stunning extra-time strike.

The centre-back drilled home from 25 yards just six minutes into the additional period to turn things around with Johan Elmander sliding in a third very late on.

Wanderers captain Kevin Davies had struck with a header just before the end of 90 minutes to cancel out Herita Ilunga's first goal for the club on the hour.

Bolton manager Gary Megson hopes Swedish club-record signing Elmander can build on his first goal for nine months.

"Johan was so desperate to score he was snatching at it," said Megson.

"If he takes his time, with the quality he has, I'm sure he will finish more but that goal will do him the world of good. Everyone is concerned about his lack of goals, none more so than Johan."
