Uefa have announced that Germany will play host to the 2024 European Championships.

After a vote by Uefa's Executive Committee in Switzerland on Thursday, the governing body confirmed that heavy favourites Germany had beaten off a rival bid from Turkey.

It will be the first time that the European Championships take place on German soil since 1988, and the first since the country was unified after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

It will also be the first major international tournament to be played in Germany since the 2006 Fifa World Cup.

The 2024 tournament will revert to the traditional format of country, or pair of countries, hosting the entire competition, with the 2020 edition set to be hosted in 12 different cities across the continent.

Germany have been European champions on three occasions, most recently in 1996, when they beat hosts England on penalties in the semi-final on their way to glory.
