Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has held talks with Ajax over a return to management with the struggling Dutch giants.

Potter has been out of a job since he was sacked by Chelsea in April last year after a difficult seven-month spell at Stamford Bridge.

The 48-year-old is ready to return to work and Ajax have identified him as a candidate to take over at the end of the season, when interim boss John van't Schip will step down.

Potter has held talks with senior officials at the Johan Cruyff Arena but it remains to be seen whether he would accept an offer from Ajax given the club is in turmoil.

Ajax’s turbulent season hit a new low on Saturday when they were thrashed 6-0 loss by rivals Feyenoord.

They are down in sixth place in the Eredivisie and last week suspended their new chief executive Alex Kroes over allegations of insider trading.

Potter is ready to get back into management with the right job.

He has already spoken to many European clubs and national teams about his availability, and is known to have rejected offers to manage Lyon and the Sweden national team.

Manchester United are believed to be interested in Potter amid growing uncertainty over the future of Erik ten Hag, who has been linked with an Ajax return if he leaves Old Trafford.

Potter worked alongside incoming United sporting director Dan Ashworth at Brighton.

His stock remains high despite his disappointing spell at Chelsea, who have continued to struggle under Mauricio Pochettino this season.
