Greeks slam referee Howard Webb

Controversial: Howard Webb
11 April 2012

England's World Cup referee Howard Webb infuriated Olympiakos after disallowing a late equaliser as they were beaten 1-0 by Bordeaux in the Champions League last night.

Webb ruled that former Blackburn striker Matt Derbyshire fouled goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso in the build-up to Enzo Maresca heading home.

However, TV replays showed little evidence of a foul and even suggested that Derbyshire was being held by Bordeaux's Michael Ciani as he attempted to challenge for the ball.

Olympiakos defender Vasillis Torosidis said: "I think the referee was confused, he thought we were playing against an English team.

"Perhaps he was a Bordeaux fan as a child. That's football, though, and this time we were the team who suffered an injustice."

Former Portsmouth striker Lomana Lua Lua wasted two great chances to level the score in the last 10 minutes.

He said: "I believe we can achieve something good in the second leg in France."
