Harrogate Town have been promoted to the English Football League after beating Notts County in the National League Play-off final at Wembley.

For the first time in the club's 106-year history, Harrogate will play in the EFL League Two next season after clinching a 3-1 victory.

Goals from George Thomson and Connor Hall put the North Yorkshire side into a commanding lead during a first half at Wembley in which they also hit the woodwork through Aaron Martin.

Callum Roberts gave County hope early in the second half but Jack Diamond settled the contest 20 minutes from time before veteran striker Jon Stead hit the post late on.

Harrogate, who only turned professional in the 2017/18 campaign, finished second in the league standings after the decision was made to finalise the table using the unweighted points per game metric.

Having beaten Boreham Wood 1-0 in the semi-final, Harrogate would have their day at Wembley - albeit with no fans inside the arena.

And they will now move into the fourth-tier of English football in a historic day for the club and its manager Simon Weaver, who has been in charge of the club since 2009 despite only being 42.
