Harry Kane is not far from being the best passer in the world, on a par with Kevin de Bruyne, according to Jamie Carragher.

Kane already has seven assists from five Premier League games this season, including a sublime pass for Tottenham team-mate Heung-min Son in last weekend's 3-3 draw with West Ham.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football ahead of Tottenham's visit to Burnley, Carragher said: “When you do co-commentary, you react to things quickly. Sometimes you say something and you think, ‘That’s not right’.

“When Harry Kane played that ball against West Ham, I said he is one of the best passers of the ball in the world.

"You calm down and you think, ‘I’ve gone a bit big there’. But then I’ve thought about it.

“Who is the best passer of the ball in the world? I’d possibly say Kevin de Bruyne.

“But in the Premier League, who would I want on the ball trying to put someone through after Kevin de Bruyne? It would be Harry Kane.

"So, if Kevin de Bruyne is the best, then Harry Kane probably isn’t far away, so maybe it wasn’t the biggest shout in the world.

“Kane has always had more [to his game] than just scoring goals.”

Kane has had success at dropping into a No.10 role this season under Jose Mourinho and Carragher believes he has effectively replaced playmaker Christian Eriksen, who left Spurs in a £17million deal for Inter Milan in January.

The former Liverpool captain also compared Kane to Eric Cantona, Dennis Bergkamp and Gianfranco Zola, and believes his new role could help him prolong his career and beat Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League goal-record of 260.

"His awareness as a footballer and brain for me is as good as anything in the Premier League, it's fantastic," Carragher said of Kane, who has scored 148 Premier League goals ahead of the match at Turf Moor.

"He's almost taken that role from Eriksen in that team.

"You think of some of great number 10s in the Premier League: Cantona, Bergkamp, Zola.

"We are talking about one of the best passers in the Premier League and European football.

"What this does for Harry Kane, for me, if he starts playing deeper, whether it's an instruction from the manager or Kane using his intelligence.

"One, it prolongs his career and two makes him more likely to break Shearer's record. Because he's not just creating, he's still scoring goals.

"It's fascinating to watch one of the best players in the League adapting his game."
