Harry Kane hoping ‘gentleman’s agreement’ will allow him to leave Tottenham this summer

Harry Kane believes he has a gentleman’s agreement with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to allow him to leave the club this summer.

Sources close to Kane indicate he has reiterated his desire to leave Spurs in the past month, having requested a transfer last summer but agreed with Levy to stay for another season.

The Spurs chairman is said to have shaken hands on a transfer this summer if Kane still felt the same, amid the hope that Jose Mourinho would help the striker to win the trophies he craves.

But Spurs have gone another season without silverware and are set for consecutive campaigns out of the Champions League, leaving Kane determined to push through an exit before this summer’s European Championship finals.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have all contacted the England captain’s entourage and Kane’s preference is to stay in the Premier League, where he is on course to challenge Alan Shearer as the competition’s all-time top scorer.

Levy, however, would be loath to sell him to an English rival, and the striker has not ruled out a move to Europe. He is close to ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, now in charge of Paris Saint-Germain, while Barcelona and Real Madrid are sure to be interested.

It remains to be seen if Levy would honour any agreement with Kane, although the player is said to be confident that the chairman is a man of his word, having always previously stuck to his agreements with the 27-year-old.

Kane has three years remaining on the six-year deal he signed in 2018, leaving Spurs in a strong position. Spurs have consistently reiterated that Kane is not for sale, but it is widely thought Levy would have to consider offers in excess of £150million for the club talisman.

The Spurs hierarchy are furious at the timing of the leak about Kane’s desire to leave, with the club still pursuing a Europa League place in the final two matches of the season.

There is particular frustration that Kane’s friend, Ryan Mason, will be forced to pick up the pieces when the interim head coach faces the media this afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s match against Aston Villa, when 10,000 fans are set to return.

Spurs have not won silverware since 2008 and Kane has now lost three finals with the club.

“Individual awards are great, they are fantastic achievements,” Kane told Standard Sport last month, after being named Player of the Year at the London Football Awards. “When I look back at the end of my career, I will go over it and take in a little bit more. The goal right now as a player is to win team trophies. I want to be winning the biggest prizes that there is to offer as a team and we are not quite doing that.”

Moving overseas would end Kane’s chances of overhauling Shearer as the League’s top scorer, having moved within 100 of Shearer’s haul of 260 goals this season.

“When you come to individual achievements, I think that is definitely right up there,” Kane added of Shearer’s record last month. “You look at the names on the top 10, the top 20 and you think of how many goals and seasons they’ve played.

“If I finish my career as Premier League top goalscorer and, hopefully, England top goalscorer, that’d be incredible — but it wouldn’t feel as good if I didn’t have a lot of team trophies to go with that, if I didn’t have the Premier League or a European Championship.”
