Harry Redknapp backs Gareth Bale to become best in the world

11 April 2012

Harry Redknapp believes Gareth Bale is on target to become the best footballer in the world after he was named Player of the Year by his fellow professionals.

The Tottenham wide man was honoured at last night's Professional Footballers' Association awards ceremony in central London, largely for his exhilarating form in the first half of the season, when he inspired Spurs to finish top of a Champions League group containing holders Inter Milan.

Bale does not turn 22 until July 16 and Redknapp is excited at the improvements the Welshman can still make to his game.

"Gareth has got better and better and he has everything to become a world-class player," said the Spurs manager. "He has pace, he can dribble, he can shoot, he can head - he's got the lot.

"Now it's just a question of whether he becomes the world's best left-back or the world's best left-sided player, because he is such a talent that both options are open to him.

"He still has plenty to learn and he will do that. We have not seen yet everything he is capable of doing.

"There is a lot more to come from him, even more than we have seen this year."

Bale's form throughout 2010 attracted the attention of Europe's top clubs, meaning Spurs' chances of keeping him will increase if they can qualify again for the Champions League.

The Welshman said: "The players have been fantastic and so has the manager for giving me my chance. The award is definitely something I want to improve on."
