Harry Redknapp’s Jordan have been denied automatic qualification for the 2018 World Cup as Australia won 5-1 to book their own place in the finals.
The Socceroos enjoyed a comfortable victory at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney to win Group B, leaving Redknapp hoping his squad will finish as one of the four best runners-up across the eight Asian qualifying groups.
"I've enjoyed it apart from today. No one enjoys standing on the touchline getting well beat,” said Redknapp.
"The players did their best. We all did our best but what can you do? I've been here five or six days, what can you do?
"The players are the players, I can't suddenly bring in [Cristiano] Ronaldo. It is what it is. They tried their best but they were beaten by a better team."
Redknapp took over the squad a week ago after Belgian coach Paul Put was sacked with Jordan sitting second in their group.
The ex-Tottenham manager’s first game in charge was a resounding 8-0 victory over Bangladesh, but three points were needed against Australia to ensure automatic qualification.
Redknapp was given a two-game contract but has since intimated he would be open to an extension, and enjoys the backing of the players.
The Jordan job is the veteran manager’s first international position despite being favourite to be named England manager in 2012. He was eventually overlooked in favour of Roy Hodgson.
