Harry Redknapp: Jose Mourinho not to blame - Manchester United's players just aren't good enough

Jose Mourinho is not the root cause of Manchester United’s problems — the players just aren’t good enough.

Everybody gets carried away with what a manager does but if you haven’t got the players, the job is very difficult.

The game is about great players and getting the best out of them. United don’t have as many great players as their neighbours Manchester City, so the task Jose has to win the Premier League title is extremely tough.

Louis van Gaal and David Moyes got slaughtered but the strange thing was that even though Sir Alex Ferguson went out as a title winner, United won it almost by default and overall it was a squad in decline. That was one of the worst teams Fergie ever had.

David had a massive rebuilding job when he replaced Sir Alex and was not given time to do it properly. Van Gaal tried to do it in his style and although United have spent an incredible amount of money, they seem to almost be starting again each summer and not working to a bigger plan.

How many of this current team would have walked into Sir Alex’s best sides? Wayne Rooney played in some of them and you could argue David De Gea but even Paul Pogba has to prove he is worthy of being the world’s most expensive footballer.

Jose doesn’t know what his best team is yet but at Chelsea — especially during his first time in charge — it picked itself most weeks.

So Jose is left to jump around and look agitated as he watches from the touchline. Mind you, people read too much into that, too.

I’ll never forget a reporter who said Arsene Wenger was like a chess master who watches everything, not jumping about and shouting like all the others.

Then, when Arsenal started losing a few games, everyone said Arsene was the biggest nutter of all! Anyone can sit there with a cigar when you are winning 4-0.
