You don't need to tell Arsenal fans that Matteo Guendouzi is a warrior - and the young midfielder owes it all to karate.

Guendouzi has quickly become a fan favourite at the Emirates for his all-action displays and passionate celebrations, with the Golden Boy nominee now arguably the Gunners' first name on the team sheet in a packed midfield.

His performances in Unai Emery's side have also impressed France coach Didier Deschamps, who has called up the youngster to his World Cup-winning squad for the second time.

Guendouzi's recent tackle on Wilfried Zaha to prevent the Crystal Palace forward from breaking at the end of their recent 2-2 draw was more WWE than karate, but the midfielder has explained how the latter shaped his fitness and spirit.

"I think it really helped me in terms of my mentality, being a fighter on the pitch, and always wanting to win and get stuck into duels in a bid to really help the team," Guendouzi told Arsenal Player.

"Karate has helped me a lot in that regard."

Guendouzi, whose father was a karate instructor, continued: "When I was young, I came third in a karate competition in France, which was great, but it was difficult to combine football and karate.

"I certainly have very fond memories from doing karate.

"In terms of flexibility. I'd say I'm more flexible on the pitch which is a great help.

"As for my fitness, karate is very intense, so I think that's why I'm able to make such a big effort and have that warrior-like mentality."
