La Liga new boys Huesca secured a shock victory away to Eibar on their top-flight debut with a 2-1 win at Ipurua.

A first-half double from forward Alex Gallar stunned the home crowd into silence and ensured the away side went into the interval two goals ahead.

Gonzalo Escalante reduced the deficit midway through the second half but, despite having 69 per cent possession, Eibar couldn't find an equaliser.

Eibar were top-flight debutants four years ago themselves and have received praise for surviving in La Liga on such a small annual budget.

But Huesca, who hail from a town with a population of just over 50,000 people, are even more obscure in terms of stature and were the bookmakers favourites to be relegated back to the Segunda Division.

Managed by Leo Franco, a former Atletico Manager goalkeeper in his first managerial role, Huesca have continued the trend of newly-promoted sides avoiding defeat on their debut - a run that goes back to Eibar's debut in 2014.
