I won’t turn my back on England, says Steven Gerrard

Painful exit: Steven Gerrard does not want the humiliating defeat by Germany in South Africa to be his last match for England

Steven Gerrard today ruled out retiring from international football in the wake of England's dire World Cup.

The 30-year-old captained the team during their troubled campaign in South Africa, which climaxed with a 4-1 defeat to Germany.

That trouncing hurts Gerrard and the midfielder is anxious to make up for that by doing his all for England in the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

"There is no way I want the disappointment of the Germany game to be my last for England," said the Liverpool captain.

"It was such a low and I am determined to do as much as I can to make amends for what happened."

Gerrard, along with David Beckham, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, has been part of an England set-up, which has failed to live up to its tag of the Golden Generation.

Following England's last-16 exit nine days ago, there was speculation over the future of those players and coach Fabio Capello.

Last Friday, the Football Association announced Capello would remain in charge with the Italian stressing that he was looking to bring in new blood next season.

Gerrard has won 84 caps and is desperate not to be part of the cull.

He said: "I expect there to be a lot of changes to the squad and it is up to the manager whether I am selected but I am going to continue to make myself available for my country."
