The Football Association are expected to name the next England head coach by next week, with Sam Allardyce still the favourite to be named as Roy Hodgson’s replacement.

Standard Sport understands the FA’s executive board are meeting this Thursday and all the candidates will be up for discussion.

Two of the 12 members of the board, chief executive Martin Glenn and vice-chairman David Gill, have been part of the interviewing process, along with FA technical director Dan Ashworth.

It is believed that after speaking to Sunderland boss Allardyce earlier this month, the trio have also held talks with Hull manager Steve Bruce, Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe and the United States boss Jurgen Klinsmann.

The executive board had already scheduled a get-together for Thursday to discuss various issues, but now the position as the next England head coach is bound to top the agenda.

Glenn and Gill will be there to make their recommendations over who should be given the post following the resignation of Hodgson after England’s dismal exit to Iceland at Euro 2016.

While the next coach will be talked about extensively, the FA may still take a few more days before finalising an appointment and making an official announcement.

After impressing in his interview, Allardyce is believed to be their first choice to oversee England’s World Cup qualifying campaign, which begins away at Slovakia on September 4.

The 61-year-old has never won a major trophy in his 22 years as a manager, but has impressed in his roles at Bolton, West Ham and Sunderland, where he kept them up last term, in particular.

He had hoped to be given the England job a decade ago, but lost out to Steve McLaren, who lasted less than two years.

While losing Allardyce will be a blow to Sunderland, they will welcome a resolution to the matter having released a statement urging the FA to make a swift decision due to the disruption it’s causing to their pre-season preparations.
