It would be a disaster if Arsene Wenger quits and leaves Arsenal 'in the lurch', says Ian Wright

Ian Wright fears Arsene Wenger will leave Arsenal "in the lurch" by quitting the club.

Wenger’s future is expected to be finalised within 48 hours following a meeting with Arsenal's board on Tuesday.

And Wright says it will now be a "disaster" if Wenger opts to step away from Arsenal.

The Gunners icon has been vocal in his criticism of Arsenal this term, stating in March that Wenger's reign was imploding, while tweeting that the manager's "dressing room is lost".

But Wright now insists he hopes Wenger stays because of the apparent lack of succession plan at Arsenal.

"I've got a nasty feeling Arsene Wenger will walk away from the Arsenal job today – and leave the club totally in the lurch," Wright wrote in The Sun.

"And you would have to say it would serve them right, because there has been absolutely no forward planning for the day when Wenger finally left the Emirates.

"The only way the board should have allowed him to run down his contract yet again is if they had private assurances from him that he was staying.

"Otherwise, it is total incompetence from the board to get to this stage."

This season, Wenger failed to lead Arsenal into the Champions League for the first time since he took over at Highbury in 1996.

Indeed, the Frenchman has endured a difficult campaign punctuated by fan protests urging him to end his long reign.

A shock victory in Saturday's FA Cup Final has given the Frenchman the opportunity to leave on a high, should he decide to take on a fresh management challenge elsewhere.

But Wright added: "The next manager should have been identified ages ago, and shepherded by Arsene for a season or two, even if he didn’t like the idea.

"With no-one to step in, I think it will be a disaster if Arsene goes.

"That’s why I often tell the fans be careful what you wish for. We already face a season in the Europa League – and things could get a lot worse before they start to get better."
