Jack Wilshere failed to enhance his prospects of staying at Arsenal after being sent off for the club’s Under 23 side in Monday night's 4-3 win over Manchester City.

Wilshere has entered the final year of his contract at Emirates Stadium, and is currently assessing his options after being told by Arsenal Wenger his first-team opportunities would be limited but he could stay and fight for his place.

Wilshere and City’s Tyreke Wilson were both dismissed after an altercation as the Arsenal midfielder reacted to a strong tackle from Matthew Smith.

Wilshere took exception to Smith's late challenge, and sent the City midfielder tumbling to the pitch with a push.

That caused Tyreke Wilson to confront Wilshere, who then reacted by getting involved in a shoving match with him before both were sent off.

Wenger said last week that Arsenal were prepared to make a "financial sacrifice" by risking losing the likes of Wilshere, Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chemberlain on free transfers next summer.

The coach said of Wilshere: "At the moment, Jack’s future is here.

"I think I plan for him to be here for the whole season, after we will see at the end of the season."
