Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been called into the England Under-21 squad for the friendly against Holland in Groningen tomorrow.

The 17-year-old has been promoted from the Under-20s by coach Stuart Pearce following an injury to Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba.

Wilshere has been tipped to have a chance of making the senior squad for the World Cup next year, with boss Fabio Capello looking to monitor his progress this season.

After starring for his club in the pre-season Emirates Cup, Wilshere was expected to be named in Pearce's squad but instead prepared for the Under-20s clash against Montenegro at West Brom.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has compared Wilshere's talent to Wayne Rooney's, with the youngster's hopes of making South Africa dependent on whether the Frenchman gives him enough appearances.

"We have time before we have to decide if he will go to South Africa," Capello said. "It depends a lot on Arsene Wenger, if he will play him."
